Other Causes of Hypopituitarism Operative surgery and irradiation for the treatment of pituitary tumours can also lead to hypopituitarism. Cranial irradiation for other reasons (for example, leukaemia) is an increasingly common cause of GH deficiency in children because of hypothalamic damage. Very rarely, severe head trauma causes pituitary insufficiency by severing the pituitary stalk. Previously, major postpartum haemorrhage with ensuing circulatory failure was a more common cause of hypopituitarism. The associated hypopituitarism resulted from pituitary infarction and is referred to as Sheehan's syndrome. This is now mainly confined to developing countries in which obstetric services are less well developed.
